How to Tell If a Company Will Be Fun to Work For
How to Tell If a Company Will Be Fun to Work ForHow to Tell If a Company Will Be Fun to Work ForSuffice it to say, at times, your office may feel like a second home. With that much time spent at work, its worth it to ask Are you enjoying your time there? Of course, salary, responsibilities, title, and opportunities for advancement are important considerations when applying for a job or weighing a job offer- but so is the jobs fun quotient. If you want to know if youll enjoy working for a given company, all you need to do is consider the three Ps people, property, and perks. Evaluating these elements reveals what a day at the office will feel like, and can help you know if youll enjoy your time spent at work. People Consider just how much time you spend with co-workers, from formal meetings to quick information exchanges to coffee breaks and possible after-work happy hours. Genuinely liking and enjoying time with co-workers can make all the difference in your attitude as you head into work on a Monday morning. To get a sense for the character of potential co-workers, inquire about company culture during your interview, and landsee if it tends toward congenial or competitive. Look around too A quiet office of headphone-clad workers feels different from space with chattering colleagues, and one of those options may feel more comfortable to you. Try to see how entry-level employees and interns are treated Are they part of the team, or are they relegated to grunt work? Pay attention to peoples personalities and general vibe, especially when talking about the company. Ideally, everyone at a company, from interns through to the CEO, is happy, engaged, and not overworked. Also good colleagues who can teach and mentor you. Property Offices and cubicles have a reputation for looking grim often the color scheme is restricted shades of gray and beige. The temperature is generally too hot in winter, and overly air-conditioned in summer. But not all offices are drab or feature recirculated air. As you walk through the office on the way to an interview, take in the aesthetics and atmosphere Would you feel comfortable spending the bulk of your week in this space? Evaluate how workspaces are laid out (e.g., cubicles or open spaces), the artwork, and general dcor. Check to see if an office has space devoted to group gatherings- such as lunchrooms with tables or a space to grab a coffee- as well as non-conference room meeting areas, private spaces to make a personal phone call, and other amenities that can make an office feel like a distributions-mix where spending eight hours a day is a pleasure. Perks Any perk or benefit a company offers is a wonderful, non-required add-on, by definition. Some things, though, are fairly standard two weeks of vacation, sick days, health insurance, and retirement fund matching. Perks that go beyond these typical offerings can be transformative to your finances and general happiness. Examples of stellar add-ons t o a benefits package include Unlimited vacation days (or any vacation time stretching beyond two weeks)Free meals and snacks alcohol at the officeBring your pet to work daysAccess to the latest technology- some companies may allow you to keep laptops, phones, and tablets after a certain tenureVolunteer matching programsBonuses and profit sharingMentorship programsPaid maternity/paternity leaveIn-house gym Perks display a companys values, the value they place on their employees, and offer a glimpse into day-to-day life. A company with paid leave for new moms and dads is likely considerate to the complicated schedule that comes with parenting a company giving out endless free meals, with booze on tap, may very likely have long hours as a trade-off. Review perks with an eye toward the picture they paint of the company and of day-to-day life on the job.

Here is how top leaders project charisma
Here is how top leaders project charismaHere is how top leaders project charismaLets face it, in business dealings, charisma counts. A lot. And charisma is as much about body language and impression management as it is about issues and substance. Ive seen many qualified people get passed over for promotion (or lose a sale or fail an interview) simply because they couldnt project a sense of professional presence.Max Weber, the father of sociology, first coined the term charisma to describe inspirational leaders. Originally from the Greek kharisma, meaning favor or divine gift, charisma has also been defined as part confidence, part presence, and part sex appeal. But however we define it, we know it when we see it. We call someone charismatic when they somehow compel us to embrace their vision - whether its corporate, social, or political.Nowhere is this more evident than in how people perceive you as a leader. So when I coach senior managers, I further define charisma as knowing how to present your best authentic self.Whether you are interviewing for a job, pitching your idea to a venture capitalist, addressing an audience of employees, or presenting a new business strategy to the board of directors, you are the most charismatic when what you are feeling internally is perfectly aligned with what youre verbally expressing. (At which point your body language automatically becomes congruent with your words.) Thats why leaders who dont buy into an organizational change should never try to promote it, and why leaders who are speaking candidly about their deepest values are so amazingly convincing.People also tend to follow charismatic leaders because they are perceived as confident and upbeat. And here you can see the power of the body/mind connection in action. You already know that the way you feel affects your body language. (If you are depressed, you tend to round your shoulders, slump, and look down. If you are upbeat you tend to smile and hold yourself erect). But did you know that the reverse is also true? The way you hold and carry yourself, your gestures, your movements and even your facial expressions affect your emotions by sending messages back to your brain. For example It has been demonstrated that a smile is not only a consequence of feeling happy or content, but also that putting on a smile can induce physiological changes in body temperature, heart rate, and skin resistance. Smiling can actually make you feel happier. And several studies show that standing with good posture and legs planted firmly on the floor (about hip distance apart) can make you look and feel more confident. The most charismatic leaders mix ansicht signals of confidence and authority with a wide sortiment of warmth and likeability cues. They display genuine smiles, maintain positive eye contact, use open-palm gestures when speaking, orient their bodies toward those with whom they are engaging, touch others during conversations, etc. And anyone can be coached to include more of these positive signals (and to reduce unproductive or negative signals) in their interactions. But heres something else I discovered about charisma. Sometimes all you have to do to be truly impressive is to get out of your own way.I once worked with the head of a research department who was preparing for a major business presentation. One-on-one, this man was charming, smart, and had a great sense of humor. In informal settings, his body language was congruent and expressive. But he was also an introvert. Put him on stage in front of an audience and he became a communications disaster. You may be in a similar situation. When talking with friends, you speak coherently and convincingly, you use your hands to help describe an vorstellung or object, you smile, frown, shrug your shoulders and make broad, smooth gestures that add meaning to your messages. Yet during important business presentations, you become anxious or self-conscious. And, as a result, your usually elo quent speech and body language suffer. If so, you may not need to work on your technique. Rather, like my client, you might be better off learning to relax and to focus more on the importance of your message and the impact you want it to have on your audience, in order to let your natural enthusiasm and convincing body language speak up.The next time you want to project your most charismatic self, follow these simple, but powerful suggestions Begin by focusing on your genuine emotional connection to your message so that your verbal and nonverbal messages begin to organically align. Then stand up straight, pull your shoulders back and hold your head high. (Just by assuming this physical position, you will start to feel surer of yourself.) Keep your body language warm and engaging. And, remember, when you add a smile you not only engage others, you positively influence your own attitude.Charismatic leaders are rarely born that way. Any leader can be perceived as more charismatic if he or she practices and improves these few basic skills. But dont take my word for it. Try it and see for yourself.

How to focus at work when your mind is somewhere else
How to focus at work when your mind is somewhere elseHow to focus at work when your mind is somewhere elseEver find yourself in a situation where you get to work after a crazy morning, and just cant seem to snap out of your brain fog? Here are a few tips for getting back on track mentally when your mind is somewhere else.Use mindfulness to your advantageA little mindfulness can go a long way, so buckle up and get calm when you really feel your mind wandering.Rasmus Hougaard, M.A., founder/managing director of Potential Project, andJacqueline Carter, M.Sc., partner and the North American Director of Potential Project, write in the Harvard Business Review about the benefits of mindfulness for leaders in the workplace. As part of the research for our forthcoming book, The Mind of the Leader, we surveyed mora than 1,000 leaders who indicated that a more mindful presence is the optimal strategy to engage their people, create better connections, and improve performance.Hougaard and Carter are also the co-authors of the book One Second Ahead Enhancing Performance at Work with Mindfulness.Dont forget to take a breakSometimes, it can feel like its a lot easier to sit around and wait for yourself to feel better instead of putting the wheels in motion by getting up, but thats not always a great idea. In fact, you might even feel more tired and bogged down emotionally. But taking a break and going for a brisk walk outside, or using your lunch break to finally get away from your desk might be a big help.Changing your surroundings can help change your frame of mind, and remind you that the world is a lot bigger than just you alone.Listen to a podcast or audiobookPew Research recently foundthat 18% of American adults said they have tuned into an audiobook over the last 12 months - so why not join them? You might just find that tuning into a good discussion or story (often for free) can take your mind to some creative places when youre in a rut. Theres nothing like listening to so mething with the capacity to make you laugh, cry or wonder out loud when youre having trouble getting your mind off of whats going on in your life outside of the office.Part of the beauty of listening to podcasts and audiobooks is that you can learn while working - without having to spend a lot of time looking at your phone screen instead of your laptop.

The Importance of Personal Branding in Your Job Search
The Importance of Personal Branding in Your Job Search How can you make a anthroponym for yourself online and on paper? In honor of Name Yourself Day which will be observedon April 9 were taking a look at five ways you can build your personal brand while searching for a job. 1. Anchor StatementAccording to branding strategistKaren Leland, a good place to start is your anchor anschauung, which Fast Company writer Chris Gayomali describes as the distillation of what you want your career to be about. Its the thesis from which the rest of your brand originates. An anchor statement is the answer to the cocktail party question, So, what do you do? Ideally, your response should be brief and focused, and it should invite conversation. You anchor statement can serve as the executive summary on your resume, your bio on social media sites, and your introduction to new acquaintances.2. KeywordsSEO isnt just f or websites anymore. Thanksto the rise of HR screening software, its more important than ever that your resume and cover letter contain the right keywords. Writing for Forbescareer, expert Susan Adams offers a list of the best and worst keywords to usein your job search, but, of course, your specific list will be tailored to your unique skills, experiences, and goals. To create your personal list of keywords, jot down as many words as you can think of that describe your field, work style, accomplishments, and more. Next, look at job ads that interest you and highlight all the eye-catching nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. Words that appear on both lists should be the foundation of your keyword list.3. ConsistencyOne of the most important aspects of personal branding is consistency. No matter the choices you make about how to present yourself, you need to make those same choiceevery time you do present yourself. Your email address, LinkedIn username, personal website URL, Twitter handle, blog, and Facebook profile as well as any other platforms you use should present a unified front. If youre still using the Twitter name you created on a whim five years ago or the email address you had in college, it might be time to update your information. The best choice for your branding is usually some variation of your real name not only is it more professional than a nickname, but its also easy to remember.4. Visual StyleOn the heels of consistency comes visual style. You may not be a design guru, but you should make an effort to use the same fonts and layouts for all of your documents. Check out Microsoft Words premade templates for inspiration, and remember you cant go wrong with a classic font like Garamond. Its better to err on the side of simplicity than to choose a decorative font like Papyrus.Your visual style should extend to your business cards. You do have business cards, right? There are many companies that offer incredibly affordableratesandeasy-to-use t emplates, so if you dont have business cards yet, go bestellung some as soon as you finish reading this postFinally, youll want to make sure that your profile picture is consistent across all platforms. Choose a pleasant, professional headshot the kind of image that youd be proud to see on your company I.D. badge. Goofy faces, pictures of your beloved cat, and sketches of your favorite superhero need not apply.5. AccuracyWed be remiss if we didnt remind you to proofread every piece of your personal branding efforts. Your online profiles, tweets, and posts as well as your resume and cover letter should be completely free of errors. Killer keywords and a compelling anchor statement wont get you very far if you neglect this last and most important step.

How to Create a Résumé That Stands out From the Rest
How to Create a Rsum That Stands out From the RestHow to Create a Rsum That Stands out From the RestCreating a rsum sounds deceptively simple with all of the available templates and technology out there. But in todays job market, crafting an effective rsum is actually more difficult than ever. There are countless rsum templates available to job seekers for free, and even more that are available at varying costs. The unfortunate truth is that no template by itself is going to be effective. If there were a magic template to help you get hired, it would quickly become overused and stop being effective. Below are some tips for job seekers on how to create a stand-out rsum that will catch the eye of a recruiter or hiring manager.Combine TemplatesThe problem with templates is that no two employers are ever going to be looking for exactly the same rsum. If your rsum looks exactly like everyone elses, its basically up to luck as to whether yours gets picked from the pile. Many employers look at individual rsums for less than three seconds before deciding whether they go on the short list or in the garbage. So, its crucial that you differentiate your rsum from the rest.If youre having trouble getting started, look up rsum templates and combine your favorite aspects of several, to create a unique final product. Just be sure that if you copy and paste anything, you go back at the end to make sure all of your font is the same, and the formatting between sections is consistent.Tailor Your RsumDifferent employers look for different things, so youll want to tailor your rsum to each position. Sometimes you should highlight your education, while other times you should focus on your job history. In some cases, you may want to discount both and focus instead on hard skills that qualify you for the job. And dont forget to use terminology specific to each job description when writing your rsum.Since creating a customized rsum is a very time consuming process, you want to make sure t hat your final result is something you can use in the future with minimal tweaks.
